The quality of life of a Roman slave depended upon the quality of life of the master. A wealthy man's slaves generally fared much better than a poor man's slaves, as the wealthy could provide better food, clothing and medical care. The quality of life of a slave also depended upon the temperament of the master. There were some masters who could be overly demanding and dealt out undeserved punishments. But on the whole the Romans treated their domestic slaves quite well as a man who mistreated his slaves was scorned and looked down upon socially. The rural slaves had a harder time, as they were not as closely connected to the owner and were usually supervised by another slave or freedman. These supervisors had the authority to deal out harsh punishments for infractions of the farm's rules.
