Spices - most especially black pepper, oddly enough - were such in-demand additives to cooking at that time. But they were extremeely expensive, and hard to get, since they came from halfway around the world (black pepper was at one time literally worth it's own weight in gold). The financial benifit from being able to bring large supplies of spices back to Europe was huge. This required long seas voyages, where much more was discovered than just spices.
