There are two factors involved in the recovery of the American alligator. These two factors are conservation (protection) and farming. The first step was banning unrestricted hunting and trapping. And by actually raising the reptiles commercially, and then returning some to the wild after they're bigger (to insure survivability), numbers jumped back up. This 'gator is not in any current danger.
The American alligator now numbers over two and a half million. The smaller Chinese alligator is endangered, and numbers only a few hundred.
With a population of nearly three million, the American alligator is far from endangered. At one time they were threatened, but conservation measures put in place allowed them to rebuild their numbers.
