It would be impossible to list all the attempts to get the nation out of the Great Depression on this format. Wiki has excellent articles about the Depression and the attempts of President FDR to tackle the economic problems. The First Hundred Days of FDR's administration saw the government create numerous agencies to help solve the problems. Some of the attempts that proved helpful were the TVA, Tennessee Valley Authority, that provided low cost electric power to southern states; the CCC, Civilian Conservation Corps that took young men out of the cities and put them to work in rural areas building libraries, bridges, and doing conservation work. They had to send their pay back to their parents, thus creating more economic activity in the cities. The SEC was created to regulate the Stock Market and try and prevent some of the events, like buying on margin, that caused the crash. One of the most important things that the government did was to instill confidence in the American public that we would survive the Great Depression. FDR and his Fireside Chats on the radio had a calming effect on the nation. There were some radical attempts to solve the economic situation outside of government, like Huey Long and Father Coughlin, but for the most part, the American public stayed loyal to the democratic principles of our republic. Unfortunately, it took World War II to get the factories back in full swing and ease the unemployment situation.

There was no help during the Hoover Administration. Roosevelt pushed emergency legislation to provide jobs with building projects and the like. It was called the New Deal. Some of it was unnecessary and wasteful, but most of it was successful. There was also a subsidy for farmers not to overproduce by limiting the number of acres they planted, and this move drew criticism because many people were going hungry.

Well they started lots of programs to help the unemployed and that was really the first time the government got involved directly with peoples lives outside of lawmaking. they even payed big companies not to lay off people. they thought if they spent money then it would work its way into the working class peoples pocket. they had soup kitchens and they started homeless shelters. they started government based projects like bridge construction and road making to hire unemployed people with families.

First, the government did the right thing: ignored it, expecting the economy to self-regulate. That was President Harding's approach. Harding died, and Herbert Hoover became president. He did the wrong things: asked the Federal Reserve for help, and bailed out businesses. (There was no way the US "could possibly survive" if the Bank of Lincoln went under. It went under, and most people now have never heard of it.)

The great depression largely was ended by the outbreak of war in Europe involving England. The US started producing a huge amount of goods and weapons (eventually) to send to England. The result was many, many new jobs in producing these goods and arms, as well as a huge increase in shipbuilding to carry these items across the Atlantic Ocean to England.

The large number of new jobs for people who had been out of work stimulated the economy and spending, which further stimulated the economy. By the time the US declared war, the great depression was essentially over. Many credit President Roosevelt's social programs, but it was the War that put an end to the Great Depression.
