Lee fought the Army of the Potomac to a standstill in the East, even tough it possessed superior forces and materiel. Most of the Union victories occurred in the West and South: Ft. Henry, Ft. Donelson, Shiloh, New Orleans, Mobile Bay, Vicksburg, Lookout Mountain, Atlanta, and the March to the Sea. By embargoing the South, by destroying its trade, manufacturing, agricultural, and transportation centers, the North strangled the South, preventing the breadbasket states from sending badly needed reinforcements, ammunition, food, clothing, and medical supplies to Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, causing it to surrender from starvation.
