They were a nomadic group of people originated from some mysterious place known as Aztlan, located somewhere in the present-day U.S. Southwest. They emigrated from Aztlan because of a civil war.
According to their own religion, they were supposed to found their first city on a place where they would find an eagle eating a snake, on top of a cactus. They saw such vision on one of the marshy islands in the Lake Texcoco (central Mexico), on 1325.
The legend and symbol have been immortalized on the Mexican coat of arms, and on the Mexican flag.
