The Aztecs changed the environment around Tenochtitlan significantly when they moved in. They created a fortress on the lake. The only entrance to this fortress was by the walkways, which meant very few people could get in or out at a time.

They also created floating gardens, called chinampas, to raise their foods on. This meant that even during a time a siege, they could still provide for themselves.

How might have the tenochtitlans location have been both a benefit and a hindrance to the Aztecs?

It was beneficial because the island kept them safe from there enemies that casted them to the area in the first place. Also they had the ability to make fertile land by digging up the mud from the lake floor. It was a hindrance because they had issues getting fresh water, but this changed when their empire grew because they built a form of aqueduct that reached the city.
