After the French lost a huge defeat in the French and Indian War in the year 1763, the British forced huge concessions on them because they were the losers in this conflict. In the Treaty of Paris, France had to surrender all of New France (Canada) and were forced to temporarily relinquish Louisiana over to the Spanish. Because the Spanish supposedly helped them in this conflict (they did little to assist the French war effort in the New World, this was just a bribe done in treaty negotiations in order to appease the Spanish in order to be a French ally in later wars).
