Catholic = Universal. The Catholic church was supposed to be the European "universal" church Constantine wanted to unite Europe so he melded the many belief systems of Europe together to create his universal, or Catholic church. Roman of course refers to the fact that the center of the church was established in Rome.

Catholic AnswerWe do not know when the term Catholic Church was original spoken. However, it appears in writings of St. Ignatius of Antioch in the year 106 AD. The "Roman" part was added by protestants in England after the protestant revolt as a slur, it is seldom used by the Catholic Church.

Before the reformation and Lutheranism it was only known as The Church. When there needed to be a distinction made between the two Churches it started to be know as the Catholic Church. 'Catholic' means 'universal' Around the year A.D. 107, a bishop, St. Ignatius of Antioch in the Near East, was arrested, brought to Rome by armed guards and eventually martyred there in the arena. In a farewell letter which this early bishop and martyr wrote to his fellow Christians in Smyrna (today Izmir in modern Turkey), he made the first written mention in history of "the Catholic Church." He wrote, "Where the bishop is present, there is the Catholic Church" (To the Smyrnaeans 8:2). Thus, the second century of Christianity had scarcely begun when the name of the Catholic Church was already in use. Therefore, it was called the Catholic Church long before the schism.

Catholic mean universal. The Church has been called "Catholic" since the first century. The first written evidence we have of this (the combination of Catholic and Church) in about 110 A.D. in St. Ignatius' letter to the Smyrnaeans. By that time, the name was already in common use.

From the Latin word meaning "all-embracing". The true meaning of catholic in English is the same - one can have catholic tastes in music without being in any way religious. Roman Catholics should call themselves Catholic, not catholic.

It originated in Bethlehem, after Jesus was born.

Roman Catholic AnswerThe Catholic religion "derived" from Judaism, if you want to look at it that way. God used the chosen people (the Jews) as His way of preparing the world for His Son - Jesus Christ. Everything in the Catholic religion is "prefigured" in the Jewish faith. This is the way that God used it to bring people to understanding. For instance, the manna in the desert was prefiguring the Eucharist. Adam prefigured Jesus. Eve prefigured Mary. Moses prefigured Jesus. Jonah spent three days in the whale prefiguring Jesus spending three days in the earth.

Of course it all comes from God, both Judaism, and Christianity (Catholicism).

Roman Catholic is an epithet first commonly used in England after the protestant revolt to describe the Catholic Church. It is never used by the official Catholic Church. It's just Catholic, not Roman Catholic. In other words, the name "Roman Catholic Church" came from protestants in England during and after the protestant revolt in the 16th century.

Before the Great Schism of 1054, the Church, at different times, called itself 'Catholic' (universal) and 'Orthodox'. After the Schism, the western branch became known as the Roman Catholic Church, while the eastern branch became the Orthodox Churches. Today, it is common practice just to refer to the 'Catholic Church'.

When a new parish is to be formed, the bishop may call the future parishioners together and get suggestions for naming the new parish. Of course, he, alone, would have the final say.
