Roman Catholic AnswerGothic architecture was a Franco-Norman invention that was used roughly from the end of the 12th century to the end of the 16 century in England and France. There were several styles but they all tended to have pointed arches and stone vaulting that made it possible. As it was the only style of building that was entirely the creation of Christian men and owed nothing to pagan styles that had come earlier, it was presented, by its enthusiasts as the style suitable for Catholic Churches. The pointed arch and the soaring upwards of the arched buildings pointed to heaven. - extracted from A Catholic Dictionary, edited by Donald Attwater.

The head of the church was constructed to the east. The north facade, which was associated with cold and darkness, is where depictions of the Old Testament were. On the south, where the most light was, there were themes of the New Testament. The Last Judgement was on the west, where the sun set.

The cathedral itself intended to become an integral part of the religious observance. The high ceiling was meant to draw attention to heaven, stained glass was to infuse the building with light and told a story in pictures. Sculptures of angles and saints surrounded the worshipers.
