Hungarians are not a genetically homogeneous group. Most of the Hungarian people are Slavs who eventually took on the cultural characteristics of the invading Magyar tribes. The Slavs invaded Central Europe during the mid-600s C.E. from what is now Ukraine because of the fall of the Roman Empire and the abundance in the Pannonian region (where Hungary is). They generally marched on foot. The Magyar invaders came around a century later. It is not clear where they originated from, but most historians point to a region close to the Ural Mountains in Russia. The Magyars were horsemen and rode into Pannonia from their ancestral homelands.
