I have found no official reason for that. It seems that it was named such because early oceanography consisted of the knowledge and skill necessary to navigators and sea traders and since the latter were principally interested in the Indian Route, in order to reach India they might have given it the name of their interests
it got its name because of sea traders and in order to reach the indian ocean they might have given it was the name of their intrests.
