Roman Catholic answer:Peter became a Christian by believing in Jesus Christ, loving Him, following Him, and doing His will. "Catholic" is a term to denote the Christian church which was first used by St. Ignatius of Antioch. He was a young man during the time of the apostles and he took over as Bishop of Antioch when St. Peter went to Rome. The word "Catholic" is from the Greek literally meaning "regarding the whole", or simply "universal" or "general". He used it in regard to the Christian church in order to point out it's universal nature, how it grew in a very short period of time to cover the known world. By the time of St. Augustine in the fourth century, he says: "We must hold to the Christian religion and to communication in her Church, which is Catholic, and is called Catholic not only by her own members but even by all her enemies." "The very name of Catholic, which, not without reason, belongs to this Church alone, in the face of so many heretics, so much so that, although all heretics want to be called Catholic, when a stranger inquires where the Catholic Church meets, none of the heretics would dare to point out his own basilica or house."

Peter and Paul didn't fight over the catholic church. Peter and Paul argued over circumcision for the gentiles. Yes this happened after Paul had become a Christian. Paul after he believed in Christ took the gospel to the gentile nations of the Mediterranean area. Peter and some of the Jewish Christians thought that the gentiles should be circumcised after they became Christian but Paul argued this was not necessary. You can read this in Acts chapter 15.
