The Dred Scott decision ruled that slaves were not citizens of the United states. Instead, they were the property of their masters. Therefore, a slave owner was within his rights to take a slave with him, even to free states.

Lincoln and Douglas were debating the consequences of the unexpected verdict of the Supreme Court in the case of a slave applying for his freedom on the grounds that his master had temporarily taken him on to free soil. The Court declared that slavery was protected by the Constitution.

Douglas argued that any state could pass legislation overturning Federal law, and won the debate, being reelected as Illinois senator in 1858 election.
