Archaeologists aren't sure because it's very puzzling why they left since they were once the center of civilization. They think when the Spanish came they conquered the Maya and they were people who wanted peace.

Disease wiped out millions of Native American and Caribbean people from the 16th through the 19th century. Smallpox and Cholera were the main 2. The Maya and other natives had no immunity to these diseases as they had never encountered them until Europeans arrived, and so they died by the millions.
