On Cinco de Mayo? The technology at the time was more or less the same for most countries, with small but important differences in the quality of the weapons employed (i.e: rifles with better aim, better-fed horses). However, the French army was much better equipped due to these quality differences and their troops had a relatively high morale; also they had an impressive numeric advantage (8,000 French vs. 4,000 Mexicans). The French army hadn't been defeated in almost 50 years and was considered to be the best army in the world at the time.
It is difficult to make a modern comparison, but being the case, the 1860's France was the 7th economy in the world, while Mexico was the 22nd. In today's terms, it would be like Canada's army fighting and winning an open-field battle against America's finest.
The Battle of Pueba, also known as the Cinco de Mayoduring the Second Franco-Mexican War (1862-1867).The Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza. The Battle was important because 4,000 Mexican soldiers defeated a much better-equipped French army composed of 8,000 men that had not been defeated for almost 50 years.
This took place in Puebla. This day was known then and now as "Cinco de Mayo". Mexican lost the battle against the French, which would make it the ultimate irony why they celebrate the day of their defeat.
The french army led by Emperor Napoleon III had not been defeated in 50 years. In the beginning of the battle, the mexican Cavalry led the french cavalry away. the rest of the french army was forced to charge through the mud and through stampeding cattle stirred up by the native americans. The mexicans used their home turf to their advantage and soundyly defeated the french. and thats why! i hope this helps you
