They made irrigation ditches to bring water from mountain streams down to irrigate their crops, and they learned to build using adobe and mud, since lumber was so scarce. They took advantage of the desert conditions in southern Utah by growing cotton and raising silk worms as well as growing crops requiring a hotter climate, like citrus trees. This allowed them to be completely self-sufficient so that they did not have to ship supplies from the East.
