The Nazi German and Soviet Union Non-Aggression Pact gave BOTH the Nazis and the Soviets time to build up their military forces and build more equipment needed to fight against one another. Josef Stalin, the Soviet "President", had his own secret information that Hitler planned to strike the Soviets in the near future. Therefore he signed the pact knowing it would only buy him time to build up the Red Army.
Hitler used the pact to fool Stalin (which it did not) and to buy his Wehrmacht (the Nazi Army) and his Luftwaffe (Nazi Air Force) time to train and recruit hundreds of thousands men. He had to make more tanks, planes and build up the supplies.
Germany wanted to make sure that the Soviet Union would not attack her while Germany invades and occupies all the countries in the west. So, Germany did not want to fight in two fronts at the same time. Interestingly, Stalin believed that Hitler would not (dare to) attack Russia. Also, the Pact was important, because they became'allies' in the partition of Poland.
The Friendship Pact between the Soviet Union and Germany was Germanies attempt to make sure Russia would not get involved in Germanies war affair like in World War I. Understand the Soviet Union was a large threat if a friendship pact wasn't made since the Soviets had a large military.
It satisfied the Soviet Union's desire to expand to the west. I.e. in the secret clause Molotov and Ribbentrop agreed that at the moment of Germany's successful advance into Poland meant a permission to the Soviet Union to occupy the eastern territories of Poland.
It protected them from any attacks by germany and gave them some extra land
It gave Germany a free hand in Poland.

It attacked Poland from the east as part of the nazi-soviet pact.
Poland was invaded & occupied by both Germany & the Soviet Union.
Germany invaded Poland from the West on the 1st September 1939, then Britain and France declared war on Germany, September 2, 1939.
Because of the pact, Hitler felt he had secured Germany's border with the Soviet Union.
The Invasion of Poland, 1939 and "the 1939 Defensive War in Germany, was carried out by Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union and a small German-allied Slovak contingent. Germany captured the Soviet-occupied areas of Poland when it invaded the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, and lost the territory in 1944 to an advancing Red Army.
