The Spanish lost the Philippines in 1898, as a result of annexation by the US, and independence did not come until 1946.
The Philippine Revolution began in 1896, mostly by rebel Katipunan fighters under leaders Andrés Bonifacio, Mariano Alvarez and Emilio Aguinaldo. When the Spanish-American War broke out in 1898, the US destruction of the Spanish fleet at Manila allowed the rebels to seize most of the major cities, and independence was declared on June 12, 1898.
However, the US did not recognize the new autocratic government, and maintained control of Manila. The Philippine-American War began with the Battle of Manila in 1899, and continued until 1902, when most of the major Filipino forces had been defeated. The war was marked by brutal atrocities on both sides, and guerrilla warfare continued for several years, despite the establishment of local governments and the election of a legislative assembly in 1907. The Philippines became a US Commonwealth in 1935, but was occupied by the Japanese from 1942 to 1945 in World War 2. The country achieved independence in 1946.
