Puritanism actually came about because of objections that the Church of England was too tolerant of views associated with the Catholic Church. Like many with strong religious views, they were intolerant of the religious views held by others, but were constrained by being in a minority in England and were themselves treated with considerable intolerance.

In New England, the Puritans wanted everyone to worship in the Puritan way. In order to ensure that Puritanism dominated the colonies, nonconformists were fined, banished, whipped, and even imprisoned for not conforming to the way of the Puritans. Puritans were at the forefront of the witchhunts that resulted in the Salem witch trials. There was an element of profiteering in this movement, but the underlying theme was one of intolerance of those with whom they might disagree.

Puritanism was an extension of the religious reformation started by Martin Luthur and John Calvin. Puritans believed that the Catholic Church was corrupt and morally bankrupt, straying from the teachings of Christ and The Bible. You can see this in the simple dress the puritan's adopted, the simple homes and the strict adherence to rules of morality, modesty and work. The ostentatious dress of Roman clergy, the grandeur of the catholic churches and the catholic practice of allowing parishioners to buy pardons for immoral behavior were offensive to the Puritans.

Who were the puritans and what did they do in regards to the Church of England?

The Puritans were English Protestants in the 16th and 17th centuries, including English Calvinists. Puritans felt that the English Reformation had not gone far enough, and that the Church of England was still too tolerant of practices which they associated with the Catholic Church. Puritans were fundamentally anti-Catholic and felt that the Church of England was still too close to Catholicism and needed to be reformed further. Puritans were unable to have these reforms implemented and most left the Church of England and many emigrated overseas. Particularly in the years after 1630, Puritans left for America, supporting the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and other settlements.
