It is thought that the Legio I Germanica, was founded either by Julius Caesar to fight in the civil war against Pompey or by Gaius Vibius Pansa Caetronianus, a supporter of Caesar. It was then stationed at Oppidum Ubiorum (Cologne) as one of the five legions on the Rhine frontier. It received the title Germanica because of its distinguished service in Germania, probably when it served in Drusus' punitive and campaigns against the Germanic tribes after the Roman defeat at the Battle of the Teutoburg forest. It one of the legions stationed in the Rhine which mutinied over the issues of reducing military service from 20 to 16 years and pay rise. It also was one of the two legions which was involved in the Batavian rebellion of 70. After the rebellion was suppressed Vespasian, the new emperor, went to the Rhine and disbanded the disgraced legion.
