Roman society was divided into the Patricians and the Plebs. This is quite different from the property-classes - the Plebs, contrary to today's use of plebeian, could be very rich, well educated, and hold all positions including the consulate, other magistracies, governorships of the provinces, and command of armies, or they could be anywhere downwards in the social and and financial scale. Patricians could be poor as well and hold no office, however they had a claim to be part of a noble lineage. There were Patrician and Plebeian branches of the same clans. So the aristocracy had grown to be a mix of both. As a result of a mix of war, civil war, low procreation and loss of wealth in the last century BCE, the Patrician aristocracy virtually disappeared by the first century CE. Under the emperors, the upper property-class relativity changed - senatorial class members saw their influence diminish as they were sidelined by the imperial government, and equestrians took on increasing duties previously reserved for the senatorial sector. Equestrian class members also increased status, as imperial ministers, magistrates, governors and agents of the imperium, in the law courts and in accumulation of wealth.

For example, the second century was between 101 and 200, the fifteenth century was between 1401 and 1500, and the twenty-first century is between 2001 and 2100.
