Trade was what enabled the Roman economy to take advantage of regional specialisations not only around the Mediterranean but also in the other areas of their empire (Gaul, Britain, the Alpine region, Pannonia, Serbia, Macedonia Romania and Bulgaria. The Romans favoured the development of trade. They kept a low taxation regime which did not discourage enterprise. They built infrastructure which favoured trade and production: roads, bridges, ports, aqueducts, irrigation canals, dams and the like. The Roman coins acted as a common currency. Rome's enormous demand for imports acted as a catalyst for trade. The specialised regional products were traded throughout the empire.
