In 1868, Grant carried Florida, Alabama, North and South Carolina, Arkansas and Tennessee in the South. 1872 was the same in the South. except that Grant lost Tennessee but carried Louisiana. There were restrictions on letting whites southerners vote and organize parties . The blacks had reason to like Grant, I think.
