After the Tonkawa were forced off the Plains, they had to become hunters and gatherers. The Tonkawa were relocated to Oakland, Oklahoma when they were forced off the Plains of Texas. They arrived there June 30th, 1885.

The Tonkawa tribe practiced agriculture, hunting, and gathering as their traditional ways of life. They also engaged in ceremonial rituals such as the Sun Dance and had a matrilineal social structure. Additionally, they created intricate beadwork and pottery as part of their artistic expressions.

By the time there was anyone settling the Great Plains in the 1800's few were European immigrants. The settlement of the plains came as small homesteads and farms. The plains still exist as it did over a 100 years ago. Great expanses of grasslands still exist and the ruts of covered wagon wheels can still be seen. Most of the people were heading to California , Oregon, or Washington instead of staying in the plains area. Life in,the plains was hard with no trees, little water, and the weather could range from hot days to blizzards.

The plains Indians virtually had to change their way of life after the buffalo became scarce. Other Indians did not live where buffalo were.
