The US acquired the Philippines from Spain in 1898 after the Spanish-American War. The Treaty of Paris in December 1898 transferred (sold, really) the Philippines to the US for $20,000,000.00.

The Philippines had been claimed and administered by Spain starting in 1565, until the Spanish-American War of 1898. The Spanish Army and Navy were unable to defend their colonies in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Philippines. Admiral Dewey easily defeated the Spanish in the Battle of Manila Bay. The islands were ceded to the US in the Treaty of Paris (1898).

On 4 February 1899 war broke out between US forces in Manila and Filipino forces around the city. President Roosevelt declared victory on July 4th, 1902.

The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century.

The US defeated Spain, the colonial power in the Philippines, in the Spanish-American War in 1898 and required Spain to cede the Philippines to the US as part of the final peace treaty.

The US then defeated the Philippine natives who had been in revolt against Spain and wanted to establish their own, independent nation.

The US defeated Spain in the Spanish-American War and demanded as part of the peace treaty that Spain sell the Philippines to the US.

The US then fought Philippine nationalists who wanted to establish an independent nation. The US call this the Philippine Insurrection. The Filipinos call it the Philippine-American War.
