Was west Berlin controlled by the soviet union?

No it was not, east was controlled by russia Pat's answer: West Berlin was controlled by the American, British, and French occupying military forces. It was originally administrated by the Soviets, American, British, and French forces, but the Soviets tried to force the western allies out of Berlin by a road and rail blockade, which was checked by Berlin Airlift. Berlin was completely surrounded by the Soviet East German territory. In the 60s, the Soviets built a wall around West Berlin (to keep their East German citizens from escaping). One had to travel through Soviet Checkpoints and across 100 miles designated East German highways and another Soviet Checkpoint before entering West Germany, The allied forces allowed the West Berlin citizens to form their own government and operate the city as they wanted. It was a shining star surrounded by the Iron Curtain. Much of the needed supplies and fresh groceries required by West Berlin later came from East Germany. The water supply system was operated and controlled from East Berlin.

Was the blockade successful?

The 1948 Soviet Blockade of West Berlin was a Failure, because although the Russians could stop land/ground traffic (trucks and trains) from travelling from West Germany, through East Germany to West Berlin, they could not stop airplanes, especially transports carrying essential supplies from flying from West Germany to West Berlin. After several months of around the clock planes flying from West Germany to West Berlin, the Russians gave up in failure.

When was Germany divided into West and East Germany?

The Berlin Wall was constructed almost overnight. It started on August 12, 1961 and after just a few months had become 66 miles of concrete and 41 miles of barbed wire. The wall was constructed mostly because of the way Germany was divided after World War II. The Allies divided Germany into four sections: Soviet, American, British and French zones of occupation. In Berlin, the eastern side was occupied by the Soviet Occupation and became increasingly conflicted with their western allies. The disagreements over how the country should be run, including debates over currency, resulted in a Soviet Blockade in Berlin from June 1948 to May 1949. Shortly after the city government split into two and in October 1949 the Soviet Union declared east Berlin as the German Democratic Republic. Over the years more and more tensions arose and the divide between democratic west and soviet east became increasingly problematic. Germans were fleeing the East daily by the thousands to search for better opportunities, and after the construction of the wall, around 5,000 East Germans escaped.
