This decision to invade Italy meant that Germany had to re-direct troops, airmen and supplies to fight in Italy. Whlle this relieved the pressure on Russia by dividing Germany's forces in the fight against the soviet union, it was not what the Soviets wanted most. They were asking for a direct invasion through the middle Europen countries and the sooner the better. The defeat of the German and Italian forces in North Africa prevented the Germans from moving through the Middle East and the Caucasus to take the Soviet oilfields from the south.
