Most Vietnamese people at the time were in favor of communists (which were also portrayed as patriots) - like President Eisenhower had written: "[if a free election had been hold] 80 per cent of the population would have voted for the Communist Ho Chi Minh" - so it is very easy to understand that they saw Americans as invaders and who worked for South Vietnamese government as collaborators. Therefore, Vietnamese always think of their war as a war of resistance (against Imperialism), a moral war and they are very prod that they have defeated the most powerful country in history.

the aussies were alies and fought in the Vietnam war with the Americans. (and of course the South Vietnamese - the Americans were paticipants on their side).
The Americans wasted 330,000,000,000 dollars on the Vietnam War.It was a HUGE waste.
They went to fight it.
