Well first of all they ate. There was always some sort of entertainment at a dinner party, but this depended on the taste of the host and his guests. If it were, for example, an intellectual, philosophy discussing affair, there would be background music and lots of conversation. If it were a more lively get together, there may be acrobats, dancers, jugglers, mimes, or even a mock gladiatorial bout. However, these were exceptional dinners, usually given for a special occasion. Most of them were just social occasions, giving the host a chance to show off his new table settings or his new cook. After the dinner, there would be games, such as the host would pick a number and the guests would have to have those number of drinks.

∙ 13y agoThere were the public festivals called "ludi" which consisted of races, theater performances, athletic events and various pageants. Then there were the private entertainments held in a person's home at a party which could consist of dancers, musicians, poetry readers, acrobats, or mimes, depending on the tastes of the host and his guests. Some private dinners consisted of philosophical discussions or even book reviews, It all depended upon the tastes of the group involved. At quiet times, there was reading, board games and dice.

This was a name for religious festivals which lasted several days and could include chariot races, feasts, and performances by street theatre groups, singing, dancing and tightrope walkers. The chariot races and the gladiatorial games were the most popular forms of entertainment.
Rich Romans entertained guests with lavish dinner parties with many courses. They ate while reclining because it was thought that it helped digestion. The poor could not afford to give dinner parties. Nor did they eat while reclining.

Poor Romans ate very similarly, but without the slaves. Instead the women in the family brought out the food and prepared it (e.g. daughters might bring out food prepared by the mother).
