The Romans overthrew was the last king of Rome (Lucius Tarquinius Superbus) in a rebellion in 509 BC. He was a tyrant who had seized power through a coup d' etat. The Romans decided to do away with the monarchy to prevent the return of tyranny. They established the Roman Republic, which was designed to prevent power from being concentrated in the hand on one man by having the city headed by two annually elected consuls.

The rebellion was sparked by the outrage created by the rape of an aristocratic woman by the son of the king while the king was away from Rome to besiege the city of Ardea. The leader of the rebellion, Lucius Junius Brutus, proposed the creation of a republic, which was endorsed by the people. When the king heard of troubles in the city he returned to Rome, but the people had closed the city gates and he had to leave.
