The Roosevelt Elk was named after TR because he saved it from becoming extinct. The moose was being killed for it's tail. The tail was a popular fashion item as a watch fob. In the early 1900's men wore pocket watches and the fob was used to anchor the watch chain between the pockets on the vest. The moose was only found in one spot in Washington state. Roosevelt began the Federal Park system setting aside lands and animals from hunting and development. The elk was one of these items that were saved by him. Today we have our National Parks because of his actions.
