The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor without an official declaration of war, and without any real sign of provocation. Naturally, this act prevoked many Americans to fight back harder to gain revenge for the fallen. "Remember Pearl Harbor!" became a rallying cry for many Americans. This resulted in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (I think), which was even more devastating than the Japanese Fleet's unannounced attack on Pearl Harbor that sunk the USS Arizona. Many Japanese people were afflicted with leukemia, which few survived. Sadako Sasaki herself was afflicted with leukemia, and died while only a teenager. Believing in the myth that you would get a wish granted if you folded 1,000 cranes, she struggled to fold them. She never finshed them. Her classmates folded the remaining cranes so 1,000 would be buried with her. The Peace Memorial stands today in Hiroshima as a "shrine" to her and the children who died of leukemia from the bombing.
