The Battle of Gettysburg changed the course of the Civil War by causing a Confederate defeat so serious that from then on the Union held the initiative in the war. The Confederate hope had been to invade the North with such success that the war would turn in the favor of the South. Instead, Union offensives followed on the heels of the Gettysburg; just as importantly, the Union regained its confidence and resolve.

The battle of Vicksburg marked the beginning of the end for the Confederacy. They were some of the first major Union victories in the war. Gettysburg is considered the Confederacy's high tide and Vicksburg saw the beginning of breaking Confederate hopes for winning the war.

The Confederate defeat at the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg was not a turning point in the US Civil War. As hindsight is always "twenty twenty" it is clear that perhaps the fall of Atlanta can be that elusive turning point in the US Civil War. The word used here being "perhaps" is in bold because there was still much fighting to be done.
