The boycotting of British items prior to the Revolutionary war hurt America in that as mostly Englishmen, they were used to certain things, such as tea, and sugar. Since the taxes on these items were climbing higher, the colonists chose to express themselves by boycotting these items. The colonists experimented with different types of tea substitutes, such as peppermint, sassafras, and chamomile. For sweetening, they used maple sugar, or honey. In doing so, they forced the British to take more stringent measures in solidifying their authority. This onrushing of events were to lead to the Revolutionary War.
