They were just like any other Union unit, but they were black with white officers. One of the things they were involved in was the new National Park system acting as the first rangers before they were created.

The Buffalo soldiers, sometimed called Buffalo troopers, etc was a slang term for Black soldiers in the US Army ( In segregated units) in the period from about the end of the Civil War up to World War I. They saw considerable action on the Frontier. The Ninth and tenth cavalry units were Black regiments. Rank and file and N.C.O. personnel were all Black, but Commissioned officers were white. General Pershing in his company and field grade days commanded a unit in the Tenth , reinforcing the martial- already sounding nickname of Black Jack- of course a hard- hitting object!

Keep telling that history; read some great military history.

How do you keep a people down? 'Never' let them 'know' their history.

The 7th Cavalry got their butts in a sling again after the Little Big Horn Massacre, fourteen years later, the day after the Wounded Knee Massacre. If it wasn't for the 9th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers, there would of been a second massacre of the 7th Cavalry.
