A single powerful leader, the Aztec emperor, ruled these lands that they conquered. All the people he conquered were forced to pay him tribute, or heavy taxes, in the form of food, gold, or slaves.

Just like any conquered people in history: they were oppressed and felt the need to free themselves form the Aztec yoke at any cost.

When Spanish conquistadors made contact in the 16th century, these peoples saw their opportunity; they allied themselves to the Spaniards with the aim of destroying the Aztecs. They however, unwittingly also doomed themselves in the process, as they also fell to Spanish-brought disease and eventually were absorbed within the colonial society, having their distinctive cultures destroyed by 1700.

Most of them were integrated into the Mexican society. Nowadays, the average Mexican has a 44% of Native American genes (along with white European and Western African).

Native Americans fleeing from encroaching Europeans during the Age of Exploration (1500-1800) were often living in the wild, and were ostracized by the rest of the society. Nowadays, they make the bulk of the lower classes in Mexico.
