They probably had a good idea when they started speaking and the foreign people who were assembled heard them in their native tongue. They were speaking languages they had never learned to tell the good news about the Son of God. The result of that was thousands being baptized. They were humble and attributed that progress to the holy spirit, not to themselves.

What are some Old Testament prophecies about Jesus' teaching about the Holy Spirit?

AnswerThere are actually no Old Testament prophecies about Jesus teaching about the Holy Ghost. However, Burton L. Mack (Who Wrote the New Testament) does offer a way of finding the prophecies you need. There is a trick that seems to come naturally when studying the Bible and which Mack sees happen all the time, in the classrooms of the School of Theology at Claremont. At first the study of a text may not seem to support a traditional Christian conviction, or the answer one hopes to find in the Bible. But with a little ingenuity, one can set up the comparison again with other emphases and make the answer come out right. If the first answer does not appear to be helpful, one can look for another answer to the same question, until the right answer appears. The Old Testament is full of just the right prophecies if you know how to do this.

How is Pentecost important to christian development?

Pentecost is very important in that on the Day of Pentecost the disciples of Jesus Christ were given the Holy Spirit to dwell in them permanently. Sometime later the Holy Spirit was given to the Samaritan believers in Jesus and then a little bit later the Holy Spirit was given to the Gentile believers in Jesus. The Holy Spirit is what is so different in Christians from other persons. The Holy Spirit has been around from ever, but not until the Christian period began did the Holy Spirit indwell persons (Christians) like He does today. I Corinthians 2:14, " But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." The natural man will never know the things of God or what the Bible truly says because they do not have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them.

When did the outpouring of the Holy Spirit happen?

The Outpouring of the Holy Spirit occurred in Acts 2V1- Day of Pentecost. In Acts 2, I am sure you know the story - where the disciples were all in one place with one accord and suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind and it filled the house where they were sitting. It was at this point that that cloven tongues of fire came upon them like fire and it sat upon them.........and so on. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. This is when the outpouring of the Holy Spirit happened.

How many times did the disciples receive the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit seems to have been needed only once, to impart the powers required by an apostle. John's Gospel says that on the day of his resurrection, Jesus breathed on the apostles in the upper room, giving them the Holy Spirit. Acts of the Apostles says that the Holy Spirit came down like tongues of flame on the day of the Pentecost and sat on each of the apostles. This anomaly can be explained because the author of Actscertainly did not know of the existence of John's Gospel, while the author of John probably did not know of the existence of Acts, even though he did know of the somewhat earlier Luke's Gospel. Each sought to demonstrate that the apostles received the Holy Spirit, and each provided his own unique account.

How many people were anointed with the Holy Spirit in the Bible?

It is not possible to know. The Bible does not tell us. We do know that everyone who believes in Jesus as their Savior has been annointed by the Holy Spirit.

What did Jesus tell the disciples that the Holy Spirit would specifically do?

Some of the promises Jesus made to His disciples regarding the Holy Spirit: John 14:16, 17 - And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever; the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.John 14:26 - But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.John 15:26 - But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. John 16:7, 8 -Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: John 16:13, 14 - However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.

Why did Paul the Apostle compare humans to temples of God?

Why was the holy spirit given to the disiples?

Before the birth of Christ the Holy Spirit was available to all men for a short time only. It was only when Christ died that the holy Spirit was available at all times to righteous men, this included His desciples so that they could know the truth of all things and to be a witness for Christ. Did you mean disciples which means a follower of Chirst, or Apostles which means those who Christ gave authority to act in His name, men like Peter, James and John?
