The emancipation proclamation allowed the businesses to hire the former slaves and boost their production and operation of the businesses. More land could be farmed and ranched by the former slaves and increase food availability to the Northern territories. It also served to protect the North or the Union from being attacked by the British forces who had intended to back up the confederate forces. The United Kingdom had outlawed slavery so they could not politically back up the confederates of the South.

At the end of the war it also allowed or provided a way for the Northern Business men to sell machinery and help the Southern businessmen to learn to conduct business without the use of the slaves. Keep in mind this was not a large endeavor or very profitable effort on the part of the Northern businessmen.
