Hadrian was proud and a due to his rank somewhat arrogant. In principle he wished the best for all, regardless of cast or religion 'one of his good characteristics). But in ordering the building of a roman-greec city on the ruined place he shocked the jews. Thus it can be said the two cultures did not understand each other.

He became angry though when he was insulted and humiliated by them. Furthermore he found out they rebelled for the third time, whereby they betrayed him by seeking help from persia in secret (not mentioned in any book), and last but not least he took it personal when he found out to have fallen ill due to their incantated damnations with which they tried to kill him. Revenge! But in principle he accepts all religions and cultures (born in Spain, bythinian friend, greek culture, egyptian cook...) Open minded!

The emperor Hadrian treated the Jews bad, bad and double bad. He rebuilt the city of Jerusalem which had been destroyed after the Roman/Jewish war of Vespasian and Titus, but renamed it Aelia Capitolina, after himself and Jupiter. He built a new temple to Jupiter on the ruins of the Jewish Second Temple, and he abolished circumcision which was considered by the Romans to be a barbaric bodily mutilation. The Jews got rather upset over these policies and a massive Jewish uprising , led by Simon bar Kokhba occurred. It took Hadrian three years of fighting with heavy losses to finally put down the revolt. He then attempted to destroy Judaism, as he saw it as the source of continuous rebellions and unrest. He prohibited the Torah law and the Jewish calendar. He executed the Judaic scholars that he could find and the sacred scroll of the Jews was burnt on the temple mount. He tried to erase the memory of Judaea by renaming the province Syria Palaestina (land of the Philistines) and Jews were forbidden to enter the new, rededicated capital.
