Transportation in general became a delicate issue - specially when it comes to the US. Travelling, a sine qua non condition in the world of business, is much more complicated, and so is the shipment of goods to and from that country (rephrase: difficult AND expensive). This is only a small share of the direct and palpable consequences of the events of September 11, but it's one of the most wearying ones.

9-11 led directly to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and while we were heading for a recession as early as 1999, 9-11 magnified the recession 100 fold and contributed greatly to the financial crisis that we're in now. The federal government would be in much better shape now if they weren't strapped with all of the debt created because of 9-11.

Many important banks and financial institutions had office space in the Twin Towers, not to mention the areas of the city that were inaccessible on account of the rubble and dust cloud. These financial offices had to shut down or transfer their work to satellite locations. Understandably, business took a hit. However, the fundamentals of the economy were not ruined by September 11th and would take an additional seven years to unravel.
