The great fire of Rome spread so quickly because most houses in ancient Rome were made of wood, which is extremely flammable. In addition to the wooden structures, they also had many household and store goods which were flammable and added to the rapid spread and difficulty in extinguishing the fire. However the most devastating aspect of the fire was spontaneous combustion. It was summer, a hot and dry summer. When the fire started to spread it gave off more heat in addition to the summer's heat. This excessive heat, combined with the flammable materials used in most homes and shops, caused the spontaneous combustion. There have been experiments proving that this could and more than likely did happen.

∙ 13y agoFires were common in ancient Rome as in other ancient cities because of the many wooden buildings which in the hot summers would be like dry tinder. The people also used open flames in their cooking and in their oil lamps. Shops also had many flammable materials that could burst into flame spontaneously, especially in the hot summer months.
