Typical conventional bombs have explosive yields approximately equal to their physical weight, the largest yield conventional bomb of WW2 was the British Tallboy which weighed 6 tons and had a yield of nearly 3 tons.

The first atomic bomb dropped in WW2 the Little Boy weighed just under 5 tons and had a yield of about 15000 tons equivalent.

Comparing them, the first atomic bomb had a weight slightly less than the largest conventional bomb used in WW2 but the yield was about 5000 times larger!

Did japan have atomic bombs when you bomb them?

No, they did not. They couldn't even come up with a decent RADAR unit for their ships like the Allies had. They had no warplanes big enough to carry the Atomic Bomb anywhere useful. By the time the Atomic bombs were dropped (killing 85,000 and 65,000 people each) Tokyo was 3/4 destroyed by conventional bombing. On the first day of using conventional incendiary bombs on Tokyo, 100,000 of its citizens were killed. One the first day! Many other Japanese industrial and port cities were similarly wiped out.

What conventional explosives are used to trigger a nuclear weapon?

For uranium fueled atomic bombs ordinary gunpowders are adequate to assemble a critical mass without a fizzle. For plutonium fueled atomic bombs high explosives must be used to assemble a critical mass without a fizzle. The first such bombs used Composition B (a predecessor of modern C-4) and Baritol. Modern bombs use shock and fire resistant plastic bonded explosives.
