They were rivals of Britain and essentially the American Revolution was a war against Britain. The French hoped to weaken Britain and conquer them, probably hoping to later conquer the Americas as well.

France did the same.

Britain and France fought over the lands and Britain won.

When the Americans started fighting back for independence, France decided to help the Americans as it would get rid of their rivals, the British.
