The arrival of the Huns in Eastern Europe precipitated the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire. It created a population squeeze in central Europe, just north of the Roman Empire. As a result, the Vandals, Sueves, Aland and Burgundians from central Europe crossed the frozen river Rhine and invaded Gaul. They then formed their own kingdoms in former areas of the western part of the Roman Empire: the Vandals and Alans in northwest Africa, the Sueves in western Spain and the Burgundians in eastern France. The Alemanni from southern Germany took advantage of this to take over Alsace (in north-western France) and Switzerland.

The Visigoths had asked permission to settle in the eastern part of the Roman Empire to escape the arrival of the Huns in Eastern Europe and had been granted this. Later a dispute developed between the young and incompetent emperor Honorius and Alaric I the king of the Visigoths. As a result of this Alaric sacked Rome and his successor, Ataulf, moved his people to south-eastern France. The Visigoths established a kingdom there which then expanded into Spain and Portugal.

The Huns raided the eastern part of the Roman Empire three times and imposed a tribute of the emperor of the eastern part of the Roman Empire. Their king, Attila, then decided to invade Gaul. This was repelled by an allied force of Romans, Visigoths and Franks.

The Franks, who had been allowed to settle in Holland south of the river Rhine and Belgium by the Romans, expanded into northern France, took over the Roman rump state of the Domain of Soissons in central Gaul and later took over southern Germany and the whole of Gaul. They became the dominant power in mainland Western Europe.
