Mohammed (also spelled Muhammad) had a vision in the desert. He returned home, and started telling people about what he saw. He told people that he had seen Allah, which was Arabic for God, and Allah had given him a set of guidelines (including giving to charity, being a kind person, honoring no god but Allah, et cetera). He amassed a large group of followers, called the Ummah. Eventually, the leaders of Medina- which was the city he lived in- made him leave Medina because his followers were challenging their authority.

So Mohammed went to Mecca, a nearby city. There, he began to get even more followers. (Muslims now have to go to Mecca once in their lifetimes in order to be considered a true Muslim.)

Eventually, Mohammed died, but his religion and society didn't- in fact, they were just getting started. The Muslims, who were mostly made up of traders and merchants, kept spreading Mohammed's ideas throughout the world through trade routes and sometimes military conquest.

It's hard not to take notice of a religion so many follow. Islam probably spreads just like any other religion. People of the Islam faith introduce their beliefs to others. Those people decide if they want to commit to the religion. Someone said that if you go to a mosque they will have no problem sharing their beliefs. Then today you have the added benefit of the World Wide Web, books, and films. If you wanted you could find a lot of information about the Islam faith. No, I don't think this will automatically convert others, but if they have enough interest and are willing to convert, it's a possibility.
