The Japanese came to attack Pearl Harbor by way of sea, launching aircraft from 6 aircraft carriers, which were part of a large naval armada. The situation was different from the attack 3 days later when Japanese land-based aircraft attacked British ships at sea.

first answer:

In 1941 Japan had assembled a fleet of aircraft carriers under command of Admiral Yamato to attack American Aircraft carriers repari stations and refueling stations, 700 miles outside of pearl harbor at about 7:00 a.m. The Japans sent their aircraft consisting of about 300 dive bombers, fighters, and Vals which flew in direct routes to pearl harbor and hitting the surrounding area.

second improved answer:

The Japanese used a strike force of 6 fleet aircraft carriers escorted by 2 fast battleships, 2 heavy cruisers, 1 light cruiser, 11 destroyers & some oilers (for refueling). They secretly departed the Japanese military port of Hitokappu Bay in the Kurile Islands (northern most part of Japan) on November 26, 1941 at 0600 hrs local time. They took a northern route to the east avoiding the normal commercial shipping lanes to avoid detection. The maintained radio listening silence. On 3 December (Hawaii time) they reached a point NNW of Hawaii and began to steam towards Hawaii. On December 7th at 0550 hrs local time they reached a point 220 miles north of the Hawaiian island of Oahu. They launched the first wave of the air attack from that point at 0600 hrs after turning east into the wind. The first wave consisted of 183 aircraft: 43 Zero fighters, 49 Kate bombers armed with bombs, 40 Kate bombers armed with torpedoes, & 51 Val dive-bombers. The second wave consisted of 169 aircraft: 36 Zero fighters, 54 Kate bombers armed with bombs, & 79 Val dive-bombers. The targets included the US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor and almost every military air base & ground installation on the island of Oahu.
