The Aborigines tell their own story about how the kangaroo got its tail.
In the aboriginal Dreamtime, Kangaroo and Wombat were men who once friends. One day, they fought over their catch after a hunting expedition. In rage, Wombat picked up a spear and threw it at Kangaroo, where it lodged at the base of his spine. Kangaroo, in turn, picked up a stone and threw it at Wombat, flattening his forehead. With that, Kangaroo bounded away into the bushland where he nursed his wounds. The spear became a tail and Kangaroo turned into the kangaroo. Wombat crawled away into a burrow, where he transformed into a wombat with a flattened head where the rock had struck. And that's how the kangaroo got its tail.

∙ 9y agoThe kangaroo's tail is long because it is used for balance. Without a tail, a kangaroo cannot hop. When hopping quickly, the tail assists the kangaroo's balance and functions as a rudder.
When walking, the kangaroo uses its tail as an extra limb. When it walks slowly, it puts its tail on the ground, which provides necessary propulsion to move forwards, and moves its hind legs forward, although these limbs cannot move independently of each other. When bending over to eat, a kangaroo has its tail on the ground for balance.
The tail is also used to provide balance when the kangaroo sits.

This is not the case, however. Research has shown that the tail is vital for propelling the kangaroo forward. Scientists have discovered that there is much more propulsion energy provided by the tail than was previously thought.

However, according to an ancient aboriginal Dreamtime story, the kangaroo and the wombat had an argument over some food. The kangaroo hit the wombat in the face with a stone, causing it to have a permanently flattened forehead, and the wombat retaliated by throwing a spear at the kangaroo. The spear lodged just below the spine. And that is how the kangaroo got its tail.
