At the end of the US Civil War, one of the nations priorities was expansion westward. The transcontinental railroad enhanced travel to the west by settlers and helped move US Army units to the west to protect them. This resulted in conflicts with the Native American Tribes. Agreements made with the Tribes were broken. A push to place all Tribes on Government reservations was in full force. War was in effect against the Tribes and as a result their bad lives before the Civil war became worse.
