The megalodon probably died from starvation and its inability to adapt to colder weather.

When the Central American Seaway closed, ice ages followed in which the ocean temperature dropped greatly. The megalodon was used to warmer temperatures and was unable to survive this change. Also, its major source of food, the Cetaceans, started become extinct and the whales the megalodons ate began to migrate to colder waters. Its food supply was cut short and they resorted to cannibalism.

This ancient shark, although one of the most powerful, could not survive the mass changes that took place during that time (late Pliocene and Pleistocene).
